What are the Pros doing this summer?

Summer is here, and hockey may be done for a while. Time for a break, right? Wrong! Well, sort of. Gone are the days where professional hockey players retreat and relax. There’s a lot more to do. Here are a few things on the typical Pro’s To Do List:

Off- ice Training/Exercise
After a few weeks of rest…players take advantage of the gym and other off-ice training options. Sure, there’s saunas and hot tubs, but there’s also Cardio, yoga, resistance training are all a must to keep a player in top form throughout the year.

Development
If a player needs work on a particular skill, this is the time to get assistance from a specialty coach/instructor. I work, for example, with many pros individually in May & June, then attend pro camps in July & August. Players that attend are always very motivated to learn & improve before the upcoming season!

Rehabilitation
Injuries have added up during the season. Most players are beaten, battered and bruised. They need time and help to restore muscles & tendons exhausted throughout the year. Rest is required, but so is proper healing, therapy and recovery! This includes such things as acupuncture, chiropractors, massage therapy and lots of sleep!

Other Sports
Playing other sports might seem crazy, but Golf for example can actually be relaxing, and offers an opportunity to be outdoors – a much needed break from the cold indoor rinks. Many pros gladly take the opportunity to golf in the summer months.

Mental Focus
A pro, as with any other hockey player, needs the summer months to re-focus. Professional hockey is not only physically, but also mentally exhausting. Many pro camps offer many seminars that focus on things such as visualization, concentration, etc. Many will also do meditation and tai chi sessions. The mind definitely needs a tune-up as much as the body!

Getting Organized
Many players take these summer months to get caught up with real life! Schooling, Medical/Dental appointments, paper work, contracts, etc.

Relaxing
Ok, yes there is definitely some down time! This is a must for all players. Getting together with family & friends and a vacation here and there, are a must and well deserved!
